Subcontractors on CIS often overpay tax through deductions before Self Assessment credits apply. This estimator roughs how much CIS suffered in the year and compares it to expected income tax on trading profit—highlighting a potential refund or amount due before you file.
It is not a substitute for HMRC’s own calculation or an agent-prepared SA100. A prominent banner reminds you that other income triggers complexity.
If trading profit is £42,000.00 and CIS deducted at source totals £9,000.00, estimated income tax and Class 4 NIC might land near £7,800.00 depending on personal allowance and config year. The screen might show roughly £1,200.00 excess CIS suffered—an indicative refund before payments on account adjust next year.
Add £8,000.00 employment income elsewhere and the model should warn that other income exceeds zero—your effective refund may shrink or become an balance due. Do not ignore the guardrail.
Capital allowances, pension carry-forward, and trading losses brought forward are out of scope for v1. Student loans and child benefit charges are not modelled.
Use CSV or JSON export to share assumptions with your accountant without retyping CIS totals from statements.
CIS statements from contractors may arrive late December. Re-run the estimator when the final statement arrives rather than relying on October guesses.
Payments on account can make “refund” feel smaller when cash hits—plan liquidity with your agent.
No PDF filing to HMRC is generated here. Results stay in the browser session unless you screenshot or note them.
Pair with the CIS deduction calculator when checking whether a new contract’s labour portion caused the CIS spike you see in the estimator.
Document contents stay in your browser for PDF generation. We do not receive your payslip, invoice, or counterparty details in v1.
